The Boston
School of Physical Education was founded on the principles of the Boston
Normal School of Gymnastics, designed to train young women to be physical
educators and womanly women besides. But within a few short years, physiotherapy
became part of the curriculum and ultimately a major in its own right.
Now in addition to learning to teach sports and games and healthy living,
students could study biology and anatomy, building blocks of reconstructive
therapy.
Camp classes
and winter skiing weeks presaged the development of a department of recreation
education, training girls to lead the leisure revolution of the 1960s
and 1970s.
