Not all
the classes in a school of physical education took place in the gymnasium.
Students were expected to have a solid understanding of the mechanics
of the body, which meant basic anatomy and physiology. Preparing to teach
entailed classes in the principles of education and teaching, as well
as training in public speaking and diction. Bouvé students also
served as models of healthy living, and were therefore schooled in the
latest principles of health education. Finally, the girls were still expected
to take regular college classes, so classes in history, English, sociology,
and other liberal arts filled the rest of the schedule.
