The Blue and White competition was not designed to pit members of the school against each other in bitter rivalry, but to foster friendly contests between fellow students of equal skill. Nonetheless, the two teams did strive to create team spirit and cohesion. Early in the history of the competition, attendance was required at all Blue and White events, regardless of the sport being played. Team song leaders demonstrated their spirit at those events with team songs and cheers, most often written by members of the team as new versions of familiar chants and songs.
