In 1978, dean emerita Catherine L. Allen began to collect information about the history of the School with an eye toward publishing a history. To that end, she sent a questionnaire to the alumnae, asking seven questions designed to form a picture of the "flavor of the times." Many women wrote back, some alumnae and some former staff of the school, the majority of whom were at school in the early years. Ruth Coyle, Lorraine Torode, Mildred Howard, and Evelyth Whalen were all students in the first half of the twentieth century, while Louise Douçot played the piano for all the classes and taught music. Their stories bring the early years of the Boston School of Physical Education and the Bouvé-Boston School of Physical Education vividly to life.
