| Scope and Content Abstract: |
The records of Northeastern University's Office of Alumni Relations
document the office's activities and communications, alumni events,
and the activities of various alumni clubs. The records include correspondence,
event announcements, a scrapbook, publications, meeting minutes, and
monthly reports. Of special interest are records concerning NU alumni,
faculty who served in World War II, and The National Council. The
National Council records document the groups objective to raise funds
for alumni programs. The records include committee meeting minutes,
annual reports, voting records and listed rolls concerning the organization's
activities. |
| Historical Abstract: |
In the early 1900s, alumni activities at Northeastern University
were organized by each department. In 1927 William C. White, who later
became Executive Vice President of Northeastern University (NU), was
appointed the first Alumni Secretary. Rudolf O. Oberg replaced White
in 1929 as Alumni Secretary of the Day Colleges. Oberg expanded the
role of organizing alumni events and furthering alumni relations,
and due to his efforts, an alumni office was created in 1943, with
Oberg as Director of Alumni Relations. An Alumni Federation was formed
in 1946 to combine the alumni activities and interests of the Day
Colleges, School of Law, and School of Business. In 1960 the Office
of Alumni Development was formed to take over alumni fund raising
from Alumni Relations. In 1964, the Board of Trustees created the
National Council with the purpose of raising funds for Northeastern
University and its alumni programs. Activities of the National Council
are documented in the archives up until 1998. |
