Scope and Content Note

The Northeastern University Department of Music records include materials pertaining to the Department's administrative activities, as well as promotional materials related to the Music at Noon concert series, the John Coltrane Memorial Concert Series, and the Choral Society's concerts. Concert programs and publicity materials are grouped by concert series.The Music at Noon concert series included the Early Music Players, the Tamarack Trio, the Choral Society, the Chamber Music Society, African American Sacred Musics, and performances by Music Department faculty and visiting musicians. Of note is the audio cassette of John Curtis's classical guitar performance in 1989. The majority of the collection dates from 1988–1993, and the concerts during this period were performed under the direction of faculty including Virginia Eskin, Roland Nadeau, Denise McMahon, Joseph Payne and Reginald Hache. Of interest are the materials related to the Share a Composer program which honored and provided local residencies for modern composers at a consortium of local universities. Included are materials related to the residencies of Vivian Fine, Gunther Schuller and Robert Starer.Administrative materials in the collection include Department correspondence, meeting minutes, memoranda, and materials related to academic music courses, which provide insight into the structure of the music curriculum and faculty activities.
