Scope and Content Abstract:The records of the Northeastern University Office of the Provost document the activities of the provosts, associate and vice-provosts, and certain university academic committees. The first series comprises the subject and departmental records of the provosts, and the strategic planning process coordinated by Marilyn Cairns and completed under Michael Baer's term as provost. The second series contains minutes, agenda, correspondence, and other records of the Academic Council and the Council of Deans. These bodies are chaired by the provost and are responsible for academic matters, including the approval of new programs and review of potential graduates. Institutional and program-specific accreditation materials are located in Series III. Series IV, Series V, and Series VI document activities and programs of associate and vice-provosts in charge of research and graduate education, faculty affairs, and undergraduate education. Series IV. Research and Graduate Education contains the subject files of Karl Weiss, Kathryn Luttgens, Philip LeQuesne, Paul Kalaghan, and Norman Adler, and also includes records of the Research and Scholarship Development Fund, the Research Council, and the Graduate Council. The bulk of Series V. Faculty Affairs is made up of Executive Vice Provost Daryl Hellman's files and includes grievance and tenure records. Activities of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, and records of the University Undergraduate Curriculum Committee are included in Series VI. Series VII. Financial includes budget and salary data from 1974-91. The final series, Sponsored Programs, documents functions and events administered by the Office of the Provost, including Opening Week, Convocation, and the Klein Lecture series.
Historical Abstract:The provost of Northeastern University is the chief academic officer of the university and reports to the president. The provost provides leadership for all curricular, instructional and faculty development matters and governs the budgeting, administering, evaluating, and planning of the academic aspects of university life. Created in 1958, the Office of the Provost has expanded with the university's size and adapted to its evolving academic priorities. Over the years the office has grown to include associate and vice-provosts who are in charge of specific academic areas such as faculty affairs, research, budgeting, graduate education, continuing education, and undergraduate education.
Arrangement:This collection is organized into eight series: Series I. Subject and Department Files; Series II. Dean's Council; Series III. Accreditation; Series IV. Graduate and Research Programs; Series V. Faculty Affairs; Series VI. Undergraduate Education; Series VII. Financial; and Series VIII. Sponsored Programs and Events.
