Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi recognizes scholarship in all areas of academic endeavor. The Northeastern chapter was established as part of the effort to strengthen the College of Liberal Arts. The society co-sponsored with NU's Council on Research and Scholarship the first Scholarship Day held on May 11, 1978, during which regular classes were replaced with special colloquiums addressing faculty members' recent research.
