Scope and Content Abstract:The bulk of this collection documents the planning and design of Northeastern University's campus and the growth of its educational programs from the 1960s through the 1980s. Included are index and dormitory floor plans and campus maps; campus master plans outlining physical and curricular changes to be made at Northeastern University; blueprints, drawings, maps, floor plans, and proposal books for buildings and areas on campus and in the community; and reports, proposals, and memoranda on buildings and program developments at Northeastern University. Also included are materials related to Northeastern University's involvement in community development, namely in the Fenway and in the Ruggles MBTA Station area. Of particular interest are the Boston Campus Master Plans, which outline Northeastern University's physical development from 1975 to 1987. Also of note are proposal books and drawings showing initial designs for campus buildings, some of which differ significantly from the buildings as they exist today.
Historical Abstract:Northeastern University's Office of Planning was established in 1959. Since 1982 it has been known as the Office of Physical Planning and Design. The Office is concerned with the design and expansion of Northeastern University's physical campus and buildings, and space planning for educational programs. Prior to 1959, the Building Committee and other special committees of the Board of Trustees handled Northeastern University's physical expansion.
Arrangement: Organized into two series: 1. Physical Planning and Design and 2. Program Development.
