Scope and Content Abstract:This collection documents the activities of the Northeastern University Office of the Business Manager between 1949 and 1996. The bulk of the collection concerns the Master Plan between 1987 and 1996. There are also collected financial audits from the 1950s when Lincoln C. Bateson held the post of Financial Officer. The collection also contains correspondence concerning office operations and projects, and newsletters sent out to the University community.
Historical Abstract:The Office of Financial Officer for Northeastern University was created in 1950. Lincoln C. Bateson, the first Financial Officer, was responsible for tuition, taxes, audits, budgets, and salaries. The position title was changed in the 1960s to Vice President-Finance. When Bateson retired in 1974, the two vice presidential posts were merged and Daniel J. Roberts became the joint Vice President-Business/Finance. In 1990, the Vice President-Finance position was seen as no longer necessary, so it was cut. The duties of the position were divided between the Treasurer and the Vice President-Business held by John A. Martin until 2002. At the time of his retirement, the Vice President-Business post was recreated as the Office of the Business Manager, a position currently (2006) held by William E. Mallon.
