This series documents Nelson Merced's 1988, 1990, and 1992 campaigns for State Representative. All three campaigns were contested by Althea Garrison, a candidate from the same district, and this series contains material from the complaints and lawsuits that Garrison filed on each occasion. Also in the series is material from Merced's planning, fundraising, and outreach activities. Records include correspondence, legal papers, agendas, meeting minutes, canvassing materials, and publicity.

This series contains correspondence documenting Merced's work as a legislator in the House of Representatives. The bulk of the material focuses on housing, education, and immigration. This series also includes letters to Merced from colleagues in the House of Representatives asking for support on legislation or inviting Merced to join a particular. Letters from individuals and community organizations on a variety of issues such as tenant/landlord relations, the Boston public school system, immigration issues, and employment are also in this series. Invitations to events are also included as well as letters of thanks to and from community members and colleagues. Researchers should note that some items are in Spanish.

This series documents Nelson Merced's work as a Representative in the Massachusetts state government from 1988 through 1992.
