Scope and Content Note: The collection contains the papers of Sondra Gayle Stein, which include records from the Abortion Action Coalition, the Coalition for Women's Safety, a socialist feminist group in Cambridge, and a workshop at New Hampshire College on surviving as a woman in the 1980s. The records span 1977 to 1981 and include correspondence, flyers, position statements, clippings, and informational files about women's issues and organizations in Boston in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Historical Note: Sondra Gayle Stein was a member of several organizations in Boston, Massachusetts that addressed women's rights and concerns, including the Abortion Action Coalition and the Coalition for Women's Safety. The Abortion Action Coalition began in 1977 to oppose the Doyle-Flynn anti-abortion amendment, which would have cut state funding for abortions. The Abortion Action Coalition also focused on issues of birth control, maternity leave, teen pregnancy, and child care. The Abortion Action Coalition disbanded in 1980. The Coalition for Women's Safety was established in April 1979 by several community organizations in response a growing number of female murders, mostly African American, in the Dorchester/Roxbury area of Boston. The Coalition for Women's Safety worked to raise awareness about violence against women in Boston, supported the families of victims, organized street and neighborhood safety networks, encouraged media coverage on violence against women, and informed government officials about safety issues for women. Stein was also a member of a socialist feminist group in Cambridge, Massachusetts that focused on rights for gay women and transsexuals.
