Louis Roper: "I’d like to interrupt and ask you one question because we’re running out of time. Was your war experience worthwhile, looking back?"N: "Yes. Very much so. I think that I became grown up, from a boy to a man, while I was in the military service, those 19 months in France especially. Besides that, meeting people from all over the United States was the most broadening influence that I’ve ever experienced in my life. I have done a little traveling since then and a little before that, but nothing to compare with those meeting with these soldiers from 48 out of 50 states in the country and becoming well acquainted and friends with a great many of them. So there’s no doubt in me that it was a great experience and well worth while. Yes, I would recommend to any young lad to get some military experience, whether it through the guard or some other military training. Because god knows, and I don’t even think he knows, when and where a thing like World War I or II might break out again."
