"We weren’t a fighting unit anyway, though we did get into a little of it. So we went back, and about 12 o clock one of the buddies came along and they kicked my foot (makes noise) you know, like that, and I jumped up and I had my Colt automatic and gas mask and everything on. I couldn’t see a thing. When I got out of that tent it was black as coal. Just about 12 o clock. All of the sudden, the sky lit up. The Germans were coming en masse; well they didn’t come that way until about 4:20 in the morning on the 15 th. Then they came over. It was supposed to be some of the sharp troops of the German Army, you know. That 38 th Infantry regiment in the Third Division, it must have been an awful bloody mess up there."
