Robert Cottingham held his first solo exhibition in 1968. Since then, he has become widely recognized as one of American's most important photorealist painters. He has exhibited in many galleries and institutions over the past forty-one years, including the Marisa del Re Gallery, New York; Gimpel and Wertzenhoffer Gallery, New York; the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia; and other galleries throughout the United States. His work is in the collections of leading museums in the United States, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
